How
does wireless phone service work?
A cellular system is designed to provide coverage in a
specific geographical region. The region is divided into several
small cells, each just a few miles across. The cells are represented
by hexagons on a map to show where one cell ends and another
begins. Each cell has in its center a cellsite which houses
the fixed radio receiver and transmitter. These are the towers
you may see along roadways. The transmitter and receiver in
each site connect to a Mobile Switching Center (MSC). The
MSC tracks and transfers your calls as you leave one cell's
coverage area and enter another, so the cellular user enjoys
uninterrupted conversations in most areas.

are wireless phones different and what kind should I buy?
There are three types of wireless phones: car phones,
transportables and portables. A car phone is a permanent fixture
installed into your car. The power source comes from the car
battery (3 watts). A transportable phone has the same power
of a car phone but can be removed or transferred from the
car for continued use. The transportable is bigger is size
than a portable. The portable phone is the smallest and most
convenient of the wireless phones. Its size lends to more

What
is the difference between Analog and Digital service?
Analog phone service was the original form of cellular
service. The problem with analog cellular is that it is not
a highly secure transmission method and is not efficient for
use with a large number of users. Digital cellular makes much
better use of the available airwaves and is more secure for
transmitting voice messages. In order to take advantage of
the benefits of digital cellular a special digital phone is
required. In many instances a digital cellular system can
provide more features for the user.

Why
are there dead spots on cellular service?
Cellular phone service is a tower based system that uses
radio-frequencies to transmit information back and forth.
This is basically a line of sight communication--that is,
if there is something blocking the line of sight between phone
and tower, the quality of the signal will deteriorate. In
tugged terrain such as regions of mountains and valleys, cellular
communication can experience static or even complete interruptions
of service.
